Luminescence: Science and Visual Arts Week 2021 26th

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.’ - Albert Einstein

The Virtual Science and Visual Arts Week, “Luminescence”, an exuberant kaleidoscope of creativity with a scientific temperament, was celebrated from 26th -30th July 2021. It was an attempt to blur the lines between the two disciplines and help students establish and discern connections between them.

Day 1:
The week began with a special assembly which focussed on the creative potential of the human mind. Students learnt how each discipline complements the other to further understanding and how this collaboration can result in solutions that can impact our lives for good. Director ma’am inaugurated the week by unveiling an origami double helix DNA on which the words - Creativity, Curiosity, Verve, Discovery- were written, symbolising these qualities as being embedded in our DNA.
Brilliant bloopers in science showed how some of the greatest discoveries actually resulted from mistakes. Macro and Micro Creativity showcased the gargantuan and the minuscule levels of creative possibilities using scientific principles. Students experimented making art using a pendulum, made colours from natural sources, researched creative Sustainable solutions that impact land, water, Climate change and more.

Day 2 and 4- Activities:
‘Creativity is seeing the same thing but thinking differently’- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

The activities to stir the creative potential of our students got underway during their classes. They were tuned in with videos of Origami DNA, caricature drawing, shadow art (VUCA) in their science and art classes, following which students explored these ideas and discovered their potential. It was an exciting journey for them. From pencil sketches to digital art, students got creative with caricatures of scientists. Shadow art taught them ‘out of the box’ thinking and some very interesting drawings resulted from this amalgamation of science and art. The senior grades were presented with a VUCA challenge- to visualise on the topic, What if humans could mutate like viruses? How would they look? Their task was to draw their vision of a mutated human, based on their knowledge of science. Thought provoking questions were posed: Could characters from Indian religion and mythology come under the category of mutation? We discussed how the COVID virus was mutating. And the question that opened up for them was to think of the possibilities and reasons why humans could mutate and if so, what would they look like? Could mutation be related to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution? Students related to Ganesha, Hanuman, Dashavatar, Ravan. And the discussion also led to Stephen Hawking, Cyborgs, the future where tech embedded humans could be a reality.

It was interesting for the science teachers to watch the creativity of their students as they churned out amazing caricatures of scientists and folded DNAs in their classes. The art teachers found students seamlessly applying their scientific concepts and going on a journey of imagination with Shadow Art and Mutation of humans.

Day 3:
The special assembly on Wednesday was reserved for the Inter-house Poster Making and Quiz competitions. The competitions drew a great deal of excitement among the students. We paid tribute to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his death Anniversary by selecting his quotation for the Inter House Poster making competition.
Student researched presentations were the highlights of the day. The exploration of scientific principles to create art by our students was indeed remarkable.

Day 5:
Our closing assembly showcased more intersections of art and science, from Optical Illusions to rainbows and Bonsai.
We had the privilege of listening to a very special guest, Priyanka Das Rajkakati, who joined us all the way from France. She is Forbes India 30 under 30 awardee for 2021 in the field of Science and Innovation. She has the unique distinction of sending her artwork to the first Moon Gallery to be established in 2025. She inspired our students with her message of working hard, pursuing one’s dreams, no matter what and the need to stay away from self-censorship.
Her interview could be uploaded on the Suncity school Facebook page with hashtags to leverage our school’s interdisciplinary pedagogy. It will also increase our school’s visibility since she is associated with prominent scientific and artistic initiatives.

All the Assemblies are available to view on the Suncity School YouTube Channel.

The week revealed that Visual Arts and Science are two sides of the same coin. Both disciplines require ‘Out of the Box’ thinking, experimentation and the joy of the ‘AHA’ moment is their biggest reward. As our creative scientists and artists explored the unknown, they enjoyed the journey towards the outcome, learning with hands on experiences.
