Science And Sports Joint Subject Week (Sporty Sci-Fi) From 14th-18th December’20

Sports and science are two integral parts of student life, often positioned as opposite ends of a learning curve. We tried to challenge this old dogma and explore if these two are really disconnected domains or there exists a deep connection between them, making them two sides of the same coin.

The departments of Science and Sports came together to present the first ever joint subject week from 14th-18th December’20 on a virtual platform. The objective of this event was to explore the unique amalgamation of these two subjects and encourage children to demonstrate the same with innovative ideas.

Day 1

The Sporty Sci-Fi week was kicked off with an exciting inauguration with Director Ma’am lighting the torch and setting the tone with her motivational speech, which was followed by morning assembly yoga.

Then, it was time for our super achiever Anushka of grade.... to set the tempo with a foot tapping RAP song which was accompanied by scintillating background of yoga and skipping routines.

A very interesting part of the assembly was presentation of ‘Science of Stupid’ videos. It was a creative way to showcase Science behind adventure turning into misadventure and communicating the message that one should learn the science behind the action and be safe.

The day didn't end with this, there was more in store to tickle our brains, first it was presentation about different sports and its deep connect with principles of science. This part was a great eye opener for all as it motivated all present to start imagining their sports experiences with various scientific learnings.

Students also presented a role play debate between eminent sports personalities and scientists to reinforce the fact that excellence in sports is achieved with scientific knowledge of the sports only.

The ‘Family Fitness Challenge’ was announced in the assembly to make sure that not only our students but their families are also part of it.  Students were challenged to teach one sports skill to their family members and share the video. The response was very encouraging; students were able to connect with their family members in an innovative way. One important take away was to see incredible story telling skills of our students in their videos.

Day 2

In continuation with the challenges planned for day 2(Tuesday), children shared various unknown sports facts in ‘Known the Unknown’ challenge, which were eye opener for many. The objective of this activity was to encourage students to explore research and gain knowledge about the subject.

Day 3

A Quiz activity based on sports and its relationship with various aspects of technology, science and health was organised. It attracted good response from all. Formatted as an inter house competition, the quiz activity achieved its set objective.

Contemporary topic of covid drew maximum response from the participant. Picture is worth a thousand words, challenge was thrown to students to present how sports and physical exercises help build immunity to stay safe from covid .

Day 4

Taking a deeper dive into correlation between sports and science, was next event of group discussion between different teams of students. Students actively participated in the discussion in their virtual classrooms.

Day 5

Our guest of Honour Mr Ajit Yadav(Indian Para Athlete - Javelin throw) addressed the students and congratulated Director Ma’am for implementing this wonderful idea of organising a joint subject week .He also shared that these two are the rays of hope and Physical and mental fitness is really important especially in the current challenging times and when health and medicine are most in focus.

The assembly ended with highly engaging mock conversation between Sania Nehwal and PV Sindhu about their journey of badminton and how understanding of science enabled them to perform better. It goes without saying our students impersonated them for the event.

A skit on Doping in sports was enacted by our students and it was a captivating performance. The objective was to create awareness of misuse of science for enhancing physical ability and its ethical consequences and also to emphasize that success/achievement of goals have direct correlation with consistent hard work/practice, competitive spirit, discipline and vision.

Glimpses of activities performed during the week were shown to the audience to showcase students’ hard work.

The week was successfully culminated with the first ever Virtual Gymnastics competition in the club hour where students showcased their fitness and finess.
