Rolling Trophy And Top Laurels At Inter-School Debate Competition

Two participants in the Senior Category, Vaibhav Kumar and Vanya Duggal, Grade IX, and two participants in the Junior Category, Twisha Sharma and Aryan Nangia of Grad VIII, participated in the 22nd Smt. Gyan Devi Memorial Inter School Debate Competition on 21st November 2020. The event covered over 75 schools from all across the country.

 Vaibhav Kumar, our winner participant, shared his experience- ‘It was my fifth debate on an online platform, but was unique because of its format. There were teams of two debaters, who presented their debate as a team going for or against the motion on the agenda “Covid-19 is a fabricated genie or a real pandemic.” At first, this agenda sounded extremely vague to me and I deliberated on the possible meanings of a fabricated genie, and how I could skew the debate in my favour through a balanced approach where I don’t discredit the authorities who are working so hard to fight the pandemic.

Through practice sessions, I understood the agenda better which provided me direction as to how I should proceed with forming my arguments. Categorizing arguments in sections like Logos, Pathos and Ethos helped me with research. Debating online comes with its own challenges like not having a live audience to connect with but after few practice sessions, Vanya and I managed to improve upon our speeches. I thank the school for the opportunity and would encourage all students to participate in debate competitions, as they help you gain a different perspective on various aspects of life.

The children did us proud by claiming the first positions in the Senior category and the top two positions in the Junior category out of the numerous participants. They also won the Rolling Trophy for the school as well. They received merit certificates, and all will be receiving cash prizes for the positions claimed by them.
