Topic:    ‘How we can use digital media without affecting our eyes'        Date:21st May 2020                                          Day: Thursday

Due to the recent spate of the novel corona virus and the unprecedented situation, students and teachers are having online classes. Most of the parents are also working from home. This is leading to prolonged use of digital media. Everyone is concerned about how to protect their eyes in such situation. Keeping this in mind a session with Dr.AshishLall ,Eye surgeon at the Lall Nursing home was organized. The session was a pre- recorded session for the EYP and PYP students and an interactive session for the MYP and senior school.

He divided his talk majorly in three parts:

1.Spectacles: Increased incidence and progression of eye power in children.

2.Computer vision syndrome or digital eye strain.

3.Ergonomics of using digital media. 

He explained the reason why a child needs spectacles and what can be done to stabilize the number. He also explained myopia or short sightedness with elaborate diagrams.

Following tips were given to stabilize the eye power: 

1.Minimize near work:Students were advised not to used digital media apart from online studies and school assignments.

2.Day light:Studying in day light to minimize strain on the eyes.

3.Eye exercise: Looking at distant objects.

4.Physical activity: Playing outdoors relaxes the eye muscles and stabilizes the eye power.

5.Medication: Certain medications can be used to stabilize the eye power but they must be used under medical supervision. 

Computer vision syndrome or Digital Eye strain leads to :

- Eyestrain 
- Headaches
- Blurred vision
   - Dry eyes     
   - Neck and shoulder pain

Causes:   

 - Poor lighting   
 - Glare on the digital screen
- Improper viewing distance
- Poor sitting posture   
- Uncorrected vision problems 
- Amount of time spent in front of the digital screen.

Solution: 
- Reduced screen time
- Correction of eye problems
- Taking regular breaks
- Increasing font size
- Correct sitting posture
