Chess is a mind game that teaches us a lot about life. It’s a sport that is not easy to master, however, with sheer practice, one can learn the skills of strategy and maneuvering through any difficult situation.

The Haryana Chess Association and All India Chess Federation organised the National Juniors Chess Championship, which began in Gurugram, Haryana from 1st to 9th November’19, held at Suncity School, sector 54. The closing ceremony was attended by MLA Sh Sudhir Singla accompanied by Sh. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary General of All India Chess Federation. Mrs Maya Makkar, Director, HDFC School and Mrs Rupa Chakravarty, Director, Suncity School, Mrs Sandeepa Rai, Principal, Suncity School were also present at the prestigious closing ceremony.

Aradhya Garg of Delhi scored six consecutive victories in the last six rounds to win 49th National Junior open with a score of 9.0/11, beating three IMs in the last three rounds. Despite starting with a score of 3.0/5, Aradhya pulled off almost an unimaginable feat. In the girls section, Srishti Pandey of Maharashtra made a short draw in the final round win 34th National Junior girls with a score of 9.0/11, finishing a full point ahead of nine girls who finished at 8.0/11. Srishti lost her fourth round game and then scored an unbeaten 6.0/7 in the last seven games. Mitrabha Guha and Koustav Chatterjee finished at second and third position respectively in the open, Arpita Mukherjee and Aakanksha Hagawane finished at second and third in girls respectively.

The Chess Federation thoroughly appreciated the role of the Suncity Director, Mrs Rupa Chakravarty, who is a sports enthusiast herself, and thanked her for holding the prestigious tournament at her school.

The nine-day long championship comprises of 11 rounds and the the first round was held on the opening day. The 49th National Jr. Open & 34th National Jr. Girls Chess tournament is being organized on the guidelines laid down by the FIDE International Chess Federation. Through this tournament, the national team will be selected for the World Championship to be held in India next year.
