Report - National Chess Tournament 1st To 9th November’19

Chess is a mind game that teaches us a lot about life. It’s a sport that is not easy to master, however, with sheer practice, one can learn the skills of strategy and maneuvering through any difficult situation.

The Haryana Chess Association and All India Chess Federation organised the National Juniors Chess Championship, which began in Gurugram, Haryana from 1st to 9th November’19, held at Suncity School, sector 54. The Chief Guest was Sh. Bharat Singh Chauhan, Secretary General of All India Chess Federation who inaugurated the tournament along with C.A. Vijay Gupta.

180 players from across the country are taking part in the open section with 5 IMs and 6 FMs. Three of the top 4 seeds in the event are from Kolkata – Koustav Chatterjee, Mitrabha Guha, Rajdeep Sarkar and Anuj Shrivatri. In the girls section, there are 119 players with 4 WIMs and 10 WFMs. All the top seeds cruised through in round 1.

The Chess Federation thoroughly appreciated the role of the Suncity Director, Mrs Rupa Chakravarty, who is a sports enthusiast herself, and thanked her for holding the prestigious tournament at her school.

The tournament will be played till 9th November. This tournament is affiliated with the Sports Authority of India and is a crucial one because through this, the selections will be made for the World Junior Chess Championship to be held in India next year.
