ACTIVITY: Making seed balls to increase green cover in  Aravallis.

The students of grade 7 and 8 went to the school ground for seed balls activity. The aim of the activity was to increase the green belt and biological diversity  in Aravallis.The material used to make seed balls are soil, cowdung powder,compost, semal tree seeds and water.Mr Bahadur (Horticulture supervisor) instructed the students how to make seed balls.Students were curious to know about the semal tree.The medicinal properties of the trees was also discussed with the students.The students enjoyed the seed balls activity and after the seed balls get dry then it will be planted in Aravallis by grade 8 students.

Brief Introduction on Semal tree

Bombax ceiba (Hindi name - Semal or Shalmali) grows to an average of 20 meters, with old trees up to 60 meters in wet tropical weather. This tree has a straight trunk and its leaves are deciduous in winter. Red flowers with 5 petals appear in the spring before the new foliage. It produces a capsule which, when ripe, contains white fibres like cotton. Trees from seeds begin flowering when 8 to 10 feet tall, and can reach 30 feet in five years.
