Today I want to ponder over the question- how does a parent know which curriculum to choose for their child? So, to investigate this issue, I did what any person with access to the internet generally does now-a-days, i.e. logging into ChatGPT. I got some very detailed, albeit standard answers that choice of curriculum depends on the child’s learning style, academic rigor, aspirations and support offered.
This exercise puts a spotlight on how the information and knowledge is going to be transmitted in the next few years. Artificial intelligence has changed the way we delve into, explore, memorize, retain and probe issues. The question we need to ask as parents is should education prepare our students for this transformation?
When the ballpoint pen was invented, it was a common belief that it would cause people to rely completely on written messages leading to our memory and recall capabilities to diminish. Today, we know that the use of pens is a tool that increases our productivity but back then it was certainly a disruption. Now, AI is causing more disruptions across sectors than it was when the world was introduced to pens. This requires us to take cognizance of the fact that the education systems and qualifications that rely on rote learning and lack global perspectives are outdated and would lead to mismatch between skills taught and assessed in the schools and those required in the job market.
In today’s world we don’t need to create students who can recall and regurgitate information as clearly the AI can do, that too, with more precision and detail. We need to prepare our students who would be able to question information, analyse it, look at it from various perspectives, evaluate it and finally take decisions. International curricula and here I am particularly talking about Cambridge and International Baccalaureate, realize that we are living in this world where the students need to be equipped with thinking skills and not just memory skills. They offer curricula that are well balanced and are reviewed periodically to keep it up to date with the changes in the areas of study, keeping with the changing times. They offer curricula and assessments which are more comprehensive and exhaustive, more likely to encourage multiple perspectives, and more likely to develop analytical, critical and evaluative abilities than any other qualifications. This is why they are globally respected, recognised and accepted worldwide.
To sum up, in this age of AI, what and how of education needs to shift and the objective is to create learners with higher skills, character and metacognition. Going forward, any curriculum that readies the learners for these challenges is the right curriculum for your child. In this respect, the international curricula (Cambridge and IB) offer much more scope so that learning remains relevant, impactful and aligns well with the demands of the future. Your child will get everything in the best International School in Gurgaon, which is the top IB school, Gurgaon.
